Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a procedure that offers a multi-step process to skin restoration without the pain, cost, and recuperation time associated with modern-day acid peels and laser treatments.

The procedure is the step between a chemical peel and cosmetic surgery with immediate benefits for both the patient and practitioner. Microdermabrasion has been called the "Lunch Time Peel" or POWER PEEL because it takes approximately 20-30 minutes and allows patients to return to work immediately.

It is the procedure we are all reading and hearing about... It fills the middle ground between facials and laser resurfacing. Over a series of six to twelve sessions, delivered weekly or bi-weekly, taking twenty to thirty minutes each, the POWER PEEL gradually removes dead skin cells and enhances the look and texture of your skin.

Specific improvement can be seen in the appearance of:

* Acne
* Skin aging
* Small wrinkles
* Fine lines
* Stretch marks, straie
* Enlarged pores
* Hyperpigmentation
* Irregular pigmentation
* Brown spots
* Rough uneven textured skin
* Atrophic skin
* Skin damaged by the sun
* Mild scarring
* Hyperkeratosis (excessive thickening)
* Other scaly skin lesions (keratoses)

Using a wand-like handpiece, tiny crystals are delivered at high velocity onto the skin surface and immediately vacuumed away with the same instrument, taking the top-most layer of dead skin cells with it.

WHAT YOU DON'T GET... There is no pain, oozing, or down-time associated with the POWER PEEL. No anesthesia is needed. As a closed system, the POWER PEEL does not raise any concerns about viral or other infectious transmission.

WHAT YOU DO GET ... · At the end of each session, you will notice a marked improvement in the texture of your skin. It will have a slightly pink appearance. If desired, you can wear makeup. · Some of the best results are seen after a series of treatments in cases of photodamage (effects of sun), blemishes, and minor acne or chicken pox scars. There is a cumulative effect and it is important to adhere to a consistent schedule of sessions to maximize the benefits. · The POWER PEEL is an integral step in pre- and post- laser resurfacing for some patients. It may be recommended by your physician to prepare skin for laser resurfacing surgery or as a comprehensive follow-up to the healing process. Please feel free to ask our staff if you have any further questions or wish to schedule your series of POWER PEELS.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is microdermabrasion???

The skin is made up of many different layers of cells. The outer most layer of the skin is called the stratum corneum. Understandably, this outer layer of skin cells gets the most damage because it is exposed to the environment. Microdermabrasion refers to the use of micronized (tiny) crystals derived from the mineral corundum to perform a safe peeling of the skin. Through a well-controlled buffing process, these corundum crystals resurface the skin by removing this upper layer of skin. At the same time, the hand piece contains a vacuum that sweeps up both the crystals and the cells of the upper layer of skin. Through the use of this unique resurfacing and exfoliation technology, we are now able to achieve unprecedented success in the treatment of acne as well as being able to erase the telltale signs of aging of the skin including fine lines and wrinkles, discoloration and uneven texture. Along with the exfoliation of the skin, the microdermabrasion technique stimulates the production of collagen and elastin which results in firmer and more youthful looking skin. Unlike laser resurfacing or chemical peels, this procedure is not traumatic and therefore there is no downtime to allow for healing and recovery.

What skin conditions are improved by microdermabrasion?

Wrinkles and fine lines,aging skin, dull skin, rough texture skin, acne irregular pigmentation, brown spots, mild scarring, scaly skin lesions also called keratoses.

What results can I expect and how soon?

After the first treatment the skin will have a fresh glow and your skin becomes radiant. Fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots become greatly diminished, and many patients report that their skin seems to be softer, smoother and younger looking. Acne scars will become less obvious. Improvement continues throughout the treatment program, and you'll begin to notice visible results after the third treatment.

What else will I need in addition to the microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a safe, non-surgical, comprehensive and progressive approach to skin care. Because microdermabrasion deprives the skin of moisture, proper skin care both before and after the microdermabrasion treatment is essential. Therefore, an appropriate cleanser and moisturizer is essential for the best results.

How long do the treatments take?

The microdermabrasion treatments last approximately 30 minutes.

What are the benefits of microdermabrasion over other procedures?

* less time
* less discomfort
* quick recovery
* no disruptions to normal activities
* chemical peels and laser resurfacing are most effective on the face but not as safe and less effective on the neck, chest and hands.
* Microdermabrasion is safe and effective on the face, hands, chest, neck, knees and even elbows.

Is the microdermabrasion technique safe for all skin types and colors?

YES!!!!!!

Have there been any reported side effects?

There have been no published reports in the literature of any significant side effects. Mild excoriations have been reported in patients with severely damaged skin following a microdermabrasion treatment. In all cases the healing time was no more than a few days. Since only the outer layer of skin is been removed by microdermabrasion, no significant skin problems should be anticipated. What precautions are necessary prior to the microdermabrasion treatment? For two weeks prior to the microdermabrasion treatment, patients are requested to refrain from having a chemical peel, tanning, having a wax treatment and getting collagen injections. Additionally, microdermabrasion is not recommended for pregnant patients.

How often will I get a microdermabrasion treatment?

The microdermabrasion treatments are repeated every seven to ten days for up to 12 treatments depending upon the size, depth and type of skin problem of the affected area. Additionally monthly maintenance treatments are recommended.

Can I go back to work after a microdermabrasion treatment?

YES!!!!! . A few patients do notice their skin feeling tight immediately after the treatment as if the skin has been exposed to the sun or wind. You might experience a slight dryness of the skin depending upon your skin type. An effective moisturizer is applied after the treatment to prevent this drying of the skin. The skin might appear slightly red for the remainder of the day. Additionally, the patient is asked to refrain from using makeup on the day of the treatment to give the skin chance to breathe and regenerate itself.

Who can perform the microdermabrasion treatment?

The microdermabrasion treatment system is available in two types of machines. One model has been designed for estheticians and is commonly used in salons. At Healthworx the medical grade microdermabrasion model is used because of the ability of this model to more completely control the depth of treatment through a more versatile number of passes and power settings. The medical grade model is not available in salons where there is no doctor supervision.

Is microdermabrasion covered by insurance?

Yes. This depends upon your specific skin condition and the reimbursable conditions of your particular insurance plan.

Why choose Healthworx for microdermabrasion?

We use the most updated and effective medical grade microdermabrasion machine to ensure that your treatments will yield the best results possible. This medical grade equipment is not available in a non-physician supervised salon. Our aestheticians are extremely knowledgeable and proficient with microdermabrasion. We use medical grade skin care products that are not available in salons. We use the finest grade crystals available. These crystals are uniform in size and shape and therefore yield the best results. Many salons use low-grade crystals which are uneven in size and can even contain potentially dangerous silica which can result in actually damaging the skin. The microdermabrasion treatment that you'll receive at Healthworx will yield far superior results especially with complicated and sensitive skin conditions.

Who should you NOT CHOOSE?

Clinics or salons that do not use medical grade machines. Beware of salons with no medical supervision. Salons have been known to re-use crystals as a cost-saving measure. These used crystals can transmit viruses from the previous person they were used on and can cause hepatitis and HIV.

Are there any skin conditions that should not be treated by microdermabrasion?

Undiagnosed skin lesions, recent herpes outbreaks, warts, skin cancer, unstable diabetes and active rosacea.
